When you feel overwhelmed and can’t slow down

You may not call it anxiety.

But something doesn’t fully switch off.

Your mind keeps moving.
Your body stays tense.

Even when nothing is happening, you don’t feel fully at rest.

You try to slow down, but it doesn’t seem to work. (If this feels familiar, you might also relate to "You're trying to relax, but it's not working. Here's why".)

And over time, this becomes your normal.

What this constant state does to your body

When your system stays in this state for too long, it doesn’t always feel intense.

It can be subtle.
Easy to overlook.

But over time, your body keeps holding tension.

Your breath becomes shorter.
Your muscles stay tight, without fully releasing.
Your mind keeps going, like a hamster wheel that doesn’t quite slow down.

And eventually, your body forgets what it feels like to truly relax.

Why it doesn’t go away, even when you try to rest

You may have already tried to take a step back.

Taking breaks.
Getting more sleep.
Stepping away from what feels overwhelming.

And for a moment, it helps.

But the feeling returns.

Because it’s not only about what you do.

It’s also about the state your body has learned to stay in.

Over time, your nervous system can get used to staying in a state of stress.

When your system has been on for too long,
it doesn’t always know how to shift out of it right away.

Even in rest, something remains active.

And that’s why rest doesn’t always go as deep as you need it to.

A different way to approach it

What if it’s not something you need to push through,
or fix by doing more?

What if your body doesn’t need more effort,
but a different kind of support?

A way to come back to a calmer state,
without forcing it.

This is where approaches like Reiki can gently come in.

Not as something that forces change,
but as something that allows your system to respond in its own way.

A way for your body to begin releasing what it has been holding,
at its own pace.

Sometimes, understanding something is not enough.

Sometimes, you need to feel it for yourself.

A personal note

There was a time when I felt this constant background tension in my body.

It became even more present when I returned to work after my maternity leave.

My son was starting daycare after being born prematurely,

and I didn’t know how his body would respond to this new environment.

Daycare, especially in the winter, often comes with its share of illnesses.

I had already been pumping since his birth, and I chose to continue,

partly to support him through that transition,

while returning to work at the same time.

I was juggling work and everything that came with being a mother,

while carrying that rhythm into my days.

There was very little space left for myself.

Everything kept moving.
But inside, nothing was truly settling.

I didn’t have a clear explanation for it at the time.

I only knew that resting wasn’t enough.

I had already been introduced to Reiki during my maternity leave.

But it took me some time to reconnect with it.

Not because I didn’t believe in it,
but because when life gets full,
we don’t always return to what we know supports us right away.

Sometimes, it takes a few reminders.
A few moments where we realize that what we’ve been doing isn’t quite enough.

And then, slowly, we come back.

A gentle way back to yourself

You don’t need to figure everything out before trying something different.

Sometimes, the first step is simply to experience what it feels like when your body finally softens.
